NPP Youth Organiser Threatens $500m Bail Bond for Alleged Offenders if Party Returns to Power
Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, newly elected National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has threatened to introduce a $500 million bail bond for persons he describes as offenders associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if the NPP returns to power. Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, October 6, he accused the government of using state institutions to intimidate young people and critics, particularly over comments made on social media. Mr Abanga said the situation was restricting freedom of expression and increasing frustration among young people. “Free speech is now criminalised to the point that one cannot even criticise the government,” he said.
Mr Abanga contrasted the situation with the Akufo-Addo administration, claiming that critics were able to insult and attack the former President without being arrested. He said the NPP would respond differently if it returned to government and warned the current administration against its handling of political opponents. “Whatever they are doing, when we come to power, the bail bond will be $500, and I am promising you as the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, so they should be careful with whatever they are doing,” he said. His comments come amid political disagreements over arrests and prosecutions involving individuals accused of making offensive or unlawful statements online.
