Assibey-Yeboah: NPP Must Rethink Some MPs (Repeat Candidates May Lose Again)
Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, a former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, has called for a critical review of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) performance in Parliament after the 2024 general elections. He warned that some sitting MPs may have trouble keeping their seats if they run again. In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, January 13, he said, “Following the 2024 elections, I looked at the scorecard.” We got 88 out of 276 seats, or 32%. There are some of them [MPs]; if we repeat them, we’ll lose again,” he said, adding that some of the lost seats could be reclaimed, but others would be hard to win if the same candidates are kept. He also said, “Some of them, too, can come back and reclaim their seats,” and he stressed again, “And we all know, I won’t mention this, but there are some of them, I know that if they run again, they will lose the parliamentary elections.”His comments come in the context of the December 2024 elections, in which the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won 183 of the 276 parliamentary seats that were declared. The NPP initially won 88 seats, but after the death of MP Ernest Kumi in a by-election, they lost the Akwatia seat, bringing their total to 87. Four independent candidates also won seats, which changed the makeup of parliament and how people felt about the elections.
