Chief Imam Congratulates Bawumia (Hails Peaceful NPP Primary, Praises Ghana’s Democracy)
Shaikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, sent his best wishes to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his victory in the NPP’s presidential primary on January 31, 2026. Bawumia beat four other candidates to become the party’s candidate for the 2028 elections. The Chief Imam praised Dr. Bawumia and the NPP for holding a peaceful and orderly congress on behalf of the Muslim community. He said, “The delegates’ decision is a clear sign that Ghana is not a theocracy but a democracy made more beautiful by religious pluralism.” He also praised the other contestants for being gracious in their defeat, saying, “Indeed, they have shown that in a civilized democratic institution like NPP, there are many ways to approach intra-party contests, but the ultimate goal is always the same.” He also praised the Police and Electoral Commission for making sure that everything was clear and accountable. He said, “They were open, accountable, and fair in their roles in the primary election,” and he reminded Ghanaians of their civic duty by saying, “Democracy is a shared responsibility and a civic duty.” If we all do our part to make democracy work, we won’t remember how hard it was for each of us, but how good it felt to work together to make it work.
