DVLA Extends Use of DP Stickers, DV Plates After Licence Plate Rollout Delay
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has stated to the public that motorists who are currently using Departure from Port (DP) stickers and DV number plates can keep using them for now, following the postponement of the planned rollout of the new licence plate system. The new plates were supposed to be introduced on January 2, 2026, but the process was put on hold because changes to the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (L.I. 2180) were not approved before Parliament went on recess on December 19, 2025.
Vehicles currently using DP stickers and DV plates should stick with the rules until a new deadline is set, noting this is to keep things in order and make sure people stay legal. The authority also told the public that this delay doesn’t change its overall plan to roll out modern RFID-equipped number plates to help with vehicle tracking and road safety, and that the new system will go ahead once all the necessary legal steps are completed. The DVLA thanked the public for their patience and encouraged vehicle owners to keep following existing licensing rules while waiting for further updates.
The Vehicle Embossment Association of Ghana (VEMAG), which includes BEMENCO Embossment Ltd and 26 other companies, has taken the matter to the High Court in Accra, asking the court to temporarily block the DVLA from rolling out any new or digital vehicle number plate system from January 2026. This request is meant to hold things steady until the court reaches a final decision on the case, which was officially filed on Monday, December 22, 2025.
