Outdated Cultural Policies Under Review as Ghana Targets Creative Economy Growth

Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has revealed that the government is taking a fresh look at old laws and policies, including the National Cultural Policy, to better support Ghana’s cultural and creative sector and help it grow to its full potential. She said this while speaking at the third sitting of the second session of GIMPA’s 25th Congregation Ceremony in Accra, which focused on how culture and creativity can drive future development through education and business.

According to her, policies must keep up with global changes while still reflecting Ghana’s own values and realities if the creative industry is to be strong and inclusive. She noted that in 2024, the tourism, culture and creative arts sector contributed about 4.8 billion dollars to Ghana’s economy and attracted around 1.2 million visitors, showing how tourism connects the country’s heritage to the rest of the world. She stressed about the importance of preserving local culture and indigenous knowledge, especially among young people, as a way to boost economic growth, and urged graduates and lecturers to work closely with government through research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Prof. Yaw Agyeman Badu, the Chairman of GIMPA’s Governing Council, congratulated the graduating students and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and national progress, while Rector Prof. Samuel Kwaku Bonsu spoke about key milestones such as stronger collaboration with government, new partnerships, and the approval of a School of Creative Arts Leadership and Enterprise, which is expected to start in September 2026. The event also included awards for the best graduating student, and Madam Gomashie was honoured with a portrait award in appreciation of her contributions to the sector and her support for GIMPA’s 25th Congregation.
