Ghana Condemns US Invasion of Venezuela—Calls for Maduro’s Release, Cites International Law

The government of Ghana has strongly condemned what it calls a one-sided and illegal military invasion of Venezuela by the United States. Reports say that this invasion led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on January 4, 2026, that Ghana was very worried about what had happened. It stressed that using force goes against the UN Charter, international law, and Venezuela’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence.

Ghana said that actions like these, such as trying to take over another country or control its natural resources from the outside, are a serious threat to world peace and stability. The government was also worried about comments made by US President Donald Trump that the US would “run” Venezuela and let American oil companies work there. They said these comments reminded them of colonial times.

Ghana said that only the people of Venezuela have the right to decide their political future, and it reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of self-determination. It called for tensions to be lowered right away, for President Maduro and his wife to be released without conditions, and it repeated its strong opposition to invasion, occupation, colonialism, and any other violation of international law.
