Gov’t Moves to Preserve Nkrumah’s Guinea Residence (Heritage Site Plan Underway)

The Government of Ghana has started talks with the family of Ahmed Sékou Touré, Guinea’s first President, to take over the house where Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah lived and worked in his last years as Co-President of Guinea. The goal is to preserve his legacy and turn the house into a heritage and tourism site. On January 21, 2026, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the initiative, which was ordered by President John Dramani Mahama. This happened after Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and a Ghanaian delegation visited the Sékou Touré family after President Mamady Doumbouya’s investiture. Mr. Ablakwa said that the government wants to fix up and protect the house with the help of preservation experts. This will create a full historical experience that follows Dr. Nkrumah’s life from Ghana to Guinea. He also promised that the public will be kept fully informed throughout the open negotiation and restoration process.
