Trade Minister Hails AGOA Extension (Says Diplomatic Push Secured US Market Access for Ghana)

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, says that her ministry’s ongoing technical, diplomatic, and political work has led to the recent three-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The U.S. Senate’s decision comes after the program ended in September 2025, which took away Ghana’s duty-free and quota-free access to the U.S. market for some goods. This was made worse by new U.S. tariffs of 10% and 15%. During the Government Accountability Series on January 21, 2026, Madam Ofosu-Adjare said that the ministry had high-level diplomatic talks with the U.S. Ambassador, technical talks with embassy officials, and regional coordination through ECOWAS trade ministers. They also talked to the public to calm exporters. She said that the extension was a big step forward for Ghana’s trade and export sector, and she credited her ministry’s planned actions and leadership for making it happen.
