GRIDCo Upgrades Afienya Substation (Power Capacity Doubled, No Outages Expected!)

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has said that it will make big improvements to the infrastructure at its Afienya Substation. This will help meet the growing energy needs in the Greater Accra Region and make power more reliable. On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, engineers will begin a five-week process to take down and install a new 120/145 MVA high-capacity transformer to replace an old 50/66 MVA transformer that is no longer working because of rapid growth in homes and businesses. This will more than double the substation’s capacity. GRIDCo has told residents that there will be no power outages during the work because they have worked with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to reroute power flows and set up backup feeds. The company said in a press release on Monday, February 2, 2026, that “Our engineers, in collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), have put in place all necessary measures to ensure that the transformer upgrade work does not cause any disruption of supply to consumers.” The Afienya area is a key growth hub for residential and light industrial activity. The project is part of a larger national effort to modernize Ghana’s transmission infrastructure to support industrialization and the digital economy. GRIDCo and ECG thank the public for their cooperation during the works.
