Ken Ofori-Atta’s Lawyer Claims GRA–SML Case is Politically Motivated
Enayat Qasimi, the international legal adviser for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori‑Atta, has asserted that the current dispute between his client and the Ghana Revenue Authority over the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) contract is driven by political factors, and he maintained that Ofori‑Atta is not dodging legal accountability.
Qasimi speaking during an interview in BBC stated that investigators, especially the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), knew that his client was overseas for health reasons, so there was no justification for seeking an Interpol Red Notice against him, and he emphasised that Ken Ofori‑Atta is willing to engage with Ghana’s judicial procedures, insisting he intends to obey Ghanaian law and address any actions from his term in office.
While also questioning whether his constitutional protections have been upheld, since the OSP was allegedly aware of his location and treatment in the United States but proceeded with the Red Notice process nonetheless; the former finance minister, who has been indicted on 78 counts related to corruption and alleged breaches of the Criminal Offences Act and Public Procurement Act in relation to the SML‑GRA matter, is currently the subject of an extradition request submitted by Ghana’s Attorney‑General to US authorities.
