Mbappe Wins €60m in Back Pay from PSG, Including €1.5m ‘Ethics Bonus’
Kylian Mbappé is poised to receive a payout of around €60 million (£52.5 m). This follows a French court ruling in his favour over unpaid wages and additional payments with his former club, Paris Saint‑Germain. One part of the judgement that drew particular attention was an order for PSG to pay him about €1.5 m (£1.3 m) in an “ethics bonus”. This may seem unusual to fans in the UK.
However, it is a standard feature in French professional sports contracts. French labour law forbids clubs from deducting money from a worker’s salary. Therefore, a portion of total earnings is classified as an ethics bonus. It forms part of the overall payment package. Earlier reports highlighted similar clauses when Neymar’s PSG contract details emerged. His monthly ethics earnings were also very high. For Mbappé, the monthly amount was significant as well.
Players are required to behave responsibly with sponsors and officials. They must avoid actions that could harm the club’s image. These are similar to “good behaviour” clauses used in other sports. Clubs have used them to withhold money from players like Marco Verratti and Hatem Ben Arfa when rules were broken. Modern top players’ income also includes bonuses. These cover loyalty, image rights, and performance‑related payments. They can add substantial uplifts to basic wages.
