Minority Demands Swift Payment of Prison Service Allowances (Warns Delays Hurt Morale, Security)

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament is worried about how long it is taking to pay non-salary allowances to officers of the Ghana Prisons Service. They are calling for immediate action to pay off the debts. The Caucus said in a statement on February 23, 2026, signed by Frank Asiedu Bekoe, Deputy Ranking Member of the Committee on Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, that three-quarters of the 2025 Rent Allowance is still unpaid. The group warned that delays put a strain on officers’ finances, lower morale, and could make operations less efficient. They stressed how important prison officers are to national security. It asked the Ministry of Finance, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, and the Ministry of the Interior to make a clear timeline for paying off debts and improve coordination to stop this from happening again. It also praised officers for their professionalism and promised to keep an eye on parliament to make sure that the state meets its obligations.
