NUGS UK: Scrap IELTS for Ghanaian Students (Act Now on Scholarship Delays, Visa Risks!)

The National Union of Ghana Students – United Kingdom (NUGS UK) is worried about the fact that Ghanaian students in the UK still have to take the IELTS and that government scholarships are taking too long to be paid out. On February 25, 2026, the Union called for diplomatic talks between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education, the Ghana High Commission in the UK, and UK authorities to get exemptions or alternatives to the International English Language Testing System. They said that English is Ghana’s official language and the language of instruction. It also pointed out that the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) have been late on payments, which has caused tuition arrears, academic restrictions, and visa risks at Loughborough University and other places. NUGS UK asked the Ghana High Commission in the UK and other relevant organizations to step in, saying that more delays could hurt Ghana’s reputation around the world. They promised to keep fighting for a solution until the problems are fixed.
