Ofori-Atta Remains in US Custody (Jan 20 Court Date Looms Amid Corruption, Fugitive Allegations)
The detention of Ghana’s former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in Washington, D.C., has evolved into a complex legal and diplomatic crisis after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended him at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, with the FBI also involved, indicating the matter goes beyond a routine visa issue, as he now awaits a January 20 Master Calendar immigration hearing that will determine whether he secures an adjustment of status or faces accelerated repatriation to Ghana to answer a 78-count corruption indictment; the case stems from his departure from Ghana on January 2, 2025, for medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic, his subsequent failure to appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor, his declaration as a fugitive, and an INTERPOL Red Notice issued on June 5, 2025, culminating in what sources described as a targeted “ambush-style” arrest at the Westlight Building, after which he was transferred to the Caroline Detention Facility in Virginia, with Manasseh Azure Awuni stating, “Everything I’m hearing from sources who were present shows this was a targeted operation. “It looked like an ambush.”Prosecutors say he ran a “criminal enterprise” that cost the state GH₵1.4 billion through the SML contract and the National Cathedral project. His defense says all of the charges are politically motivated and that due process was violated.
