Parliament Raises Concern Over Unauthorised Containers in East Legon
The Local Government and Rural Development Committee of Parliament has raised concerns over the continued presence of containers and other unauthorised structures in East Legon, Accra. The Committee raised the issue during an engagement with officials of the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly, who told lawmakers that the Assembly had not issued permits for the structures. The revelation prompted questions about the Assembly’s monitoring and enforcement of planning regulations in the area.
Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, Chairperson of the Committee, questioned why the unauthorised structures continued to emerge despite the Assembly’s position that they had not been approved. She urged the Assembly to take concrete steps to enforce planning regulations and address the growing number of containers and temporary structures. “Why do you allow containers springing up everywhere around such an expensive area? And temporary structures too. There are a lot of them there. Are you ready to do something about it because they are unauthorised structures and containers and all of that?” she asked. The Committee subsequently tasked the Assembly to develop a comprehensive strategy to clear the unauthorised structures and strengthen enforcement within the municipality.
