2 Million Ghanaians With Disabilities Need This Law NOW — GFDO Sounds Alarm

The Government of Ghana is being called upon by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFDO) to expedite the process of revising the disability Bill. The GFDO asserts that the revision of the Bill is of critical importance in safeguarding the rights of the more than two million citizens of Ghana who are disabled. The Vice President, Martha Coffie, issued a call to action to the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, requesting that they swiftly finish any outstanding procedures and then introduce the Bill to Parliament. Coffie also emphasized that it was imperative for the legislators to approve the Bill without any more postponement. She elaborated on how the revised legislation would result in the modernization of Ghana’s legal framework, provide clarity to the definition of obligations, and enhance accessibility to employment, education, healthcare, transportation, social services, and justice. Due to the fact that the legislation that was enacted in 2006 does not match the criteria that have been established on a worldwide scale or the requirements of Ghana under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, it is imposing obstacles in the way of integration. The GFDO also issued a call to action for the National Council on Persons with Disabilities, urging them to increase public awareness and stakeholder engagement so that institutions will be prepared to carry out the provisions of the law as soon as it is enacted. This revision, according to the GFDO, is essential to ensuring that there is an equal distribution of opportunities and that the Sustainable Development Goals are being met.
