Peace Council in Crisis: Budget Slashed, No District Offices, Conflicts Rising

Most Reverend Emmanuel Fianu, who serves as the chairman of the National Peace Council, has said that the council is encountering difficulties in managing more than three hundred incidents of conflict around the country of Ghana because of significant deficiencies in both personnel and funds. The National Peace Council (NPC) is unable to manage issues that span the spectrum from political tensions to chieftaincy and land conflicts due to the fact that it has only 83 regular employees as opposed to the 400 that are necessary, and it does not have any district offices. He went on to point out that out of the budget of GH₵5 million that has been set aside for the year 2025, only about half of it has been distributed. This majority of the funds have been used to support wages, which leaves very little money available for mediation, training, or emergency response. The amount of money that has been collected for the Peace Fund, which was established to provide financial assistance to the Council, is GH₵400,000, which is far lower than the amount that is required. Rev. Fianu expressed the need for more government assistance, prompt money, and extra personnel, warning that if these were not provided, unresolved issues might worsen, particularly in light of the anticipated surge in political activity in the next year.
