7,200 health workers hired, reporting July 1, ministry says rural postings first as 105,000 still wait.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced that more than 7,200 health professionals have secured placements under the ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise and are expected to begin work on July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen the Free Primary Healthcare policy and improve healthcare delivery, especially in underserved communities. According to the Director of Human Resource for Health Development, Frederick Mensah Acheampong, the Ministry received financial clearance to recruit about 8,000 health workers despite a backlog of over 105,000 unemployed professionals, with allocations based on staffing needs and healthcare gaps across the country. He disclosed that 6,245 nurses and midwives, 771 allied health professionals, 235 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and all allocated physician assistants had secured placements, while some vacancies remain in northern districts for specialised cadres. He added that the recruitment portal, which captured over 53,000 records, would be reopened for a mop-up exercise to fill remaining vacancies, while the Ministry also plans to recruit more medical officers and engage over 6,000 volunteers to support healthcare delivery, cautioning applicants against fraud as investigations into illegal recruitment activities continue.
