Wontumi in fresh trouble, GH¢14.3m fraud, forgery, money laundering charges land NPP chairman in court.

The New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has been charged at the High Court in Accra with new charges of alleged fraud, forgery, money laundering and causing financial loss to a public institution. He and another accused allegedly obtained over GH¢14.3 million from the Ghana Export-Import Bank on false pretences including the use of a disputed document presented as proof of purchase for agricultural equipment, the charge sheet filed by the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, said. The money was raised on the basis of false promises for a large-scale farming project that never materialised, including promises of land acquisition and job creation, prosecutors say. Wontumi, who has pleaded not guilty to four counts, was granted bail on the report that one of the co-accused is on the run. “Further, the prosecution claims no farming activities or equipment procurement took place and funds were diverted for other uses.”
