Big Telecom Shakeup! AT Ghana & Telecel Merger Sent to Cabinet—Sam George Demands Full Audit Before Spending More Public Cash. Decision Expected by Year-End!

According to Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, the restructuring agreement that has been reached between AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana has been presented to the Cabinet for assessment and approval. He anticipates that this process would be finished by the end of the year 2025. He emphasized that it would be inappropriate to contribute further public money without first examining the government’s ownership and understanding the reasons behind the losses experienced by both enterprises. Sam George maintains that, prior to any investment decision, the government is obligated to carry out an audit of all of its assets in the telecommunications sector. This includes its 100 percent ownership of AT Ghana and its 30 percent ownership in Telecel Ghana. The objective of the proposed merger is to build a more powerful telecommunications operator. The subsequent actions will be contingent upon the Cabinet’s direction, and all of the particulars will be disclosed to the public upon receiving approval, he said.
