No Chief Above the Law: Otumfuo Calls for Legal Respect in Bawku Dispute

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced that significant reconciliation has been achieved between the Kussasi and Mamprusi communities in towns affected by the long-running Bawku chieftaincy dispute, following extensive consultations by the mediation committee. Presenting the Bawku Peace Mediation Report to President John Mahama at Jubilee House, he explained that engagements with traditional leaders impacted by past legislations showed meaningful reconciliation in all affected towns outside Bawku. He urged the government to firmly enforce existing laws that recognise Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the legitimate Chief of Bawku and head of the Kusasi Traditional Area, stressing that the committee’s recommendations are grounded in the Constitution and Supreme Court rulings. Otumfuo emphasised that no traditional authority is above the law and called on the Nayiri, Naa Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, to accept the current legal position.
