All firearm permits cancelled, new registration with mental health tests, drug checks, and proficiency training required.
The Ministry for the Interior has cancelled all firearm permits nationwide and directed licensed gun owners to undergo a new registration process as part of enhanced measures aimed at improving public safety.
Announcing the directive, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, explained that the decision was prompted by a growing number of suicides involving legally licensed firearms, as well as cases where registered weapons had been used in criminal activities.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra yesterday, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak stated that all current firearm licence holders would be required to re-register their weapons under a more stringent regulatory framework. The new process will include compulsory mental health evaluations, drug testing, and firearms proficiency training.
