ECOWAS Court tosses out Gertrude Torkornoo’s claims against Ghana, no rights violations found, no $10m damages.
The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has dismissed all seven claims brought by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo against the Republic of Ghana, according to Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai.
The case stemmed from Justice Torkornoo’s challenge to her suspension and subsequent removal from office, which she contended violated her rights under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Prior to its final decision, the regional court had considered several preliminary objections and procedural applications related to the matter.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 24, Dr Srem-Sai disclosed that the court also rejected the former Chief Justice’s demand for US$10 million in damages. He noted that the judges found no proof that Ghana had infringed upon any of the rights she alleged had been violated.
