Frimpong-Boateng Warns NPP: ‘Old Flagbearer Means Trouble (Party Risks Trainwreck)

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, who used to be the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, has told the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to re-elect its old flagbearer. He says that doing so would have serious effects on the party, which he says no longer reflects the values and principles he once knew. He said that the party’s internal elections were unfair because they used bribery, intimidation, and manipulation to choose their last flagbearer. He said, “Look at how they chose their last flagbearer—by twisting people’s arms, bribing delegates, and scaring others.” This is how corruption starts, and no serious party or organization should put up with it. Prof. Frimpong-Boateng said that the NPP hasn’t done a good job of figuring out why it lost the last general elections so badly. He said, “We lost the elections badly, but we won’t deal with the problems that caused that loss.” If the party chooses the old flagbearer again, it will be a disaster. He made it clear that his comments were not based on any personal dislike of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, calling him a “nice person.” However, he stressed that personal qualities alone are not enough for leadership and urged Dr. Bawumia to distance himself from those he said were to blame for the economic problems during the Akufo-Addo administration in order to help rebuild public trust.
