From GH¢362 million to GH¢5 billion, Common Fund disbursements explode in 2025, now tied to boreholes, classrooms, and 24-hour markets.

Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, said that the District Assemblies Common Fund only gave Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies GH¢362 million in 2024. However, he said that things got a lot better in 2025 when total payments reached GH¢5 billion. At the government’s Accountability Series on April 20, he talked about how the money was broken down into quarters. In the first quarter, GH¢790.37 million was released; in the second quarter, GH¢1.46 billion; in the third quarter, GH¢1.19 billion; and in the fourth quarter, GH¢1.59 billion. The Minister said that the funds should be released on time because all assemblies have development goals that include building at least two CHPS compounds, three classroom blocks, and ten boreholes in each district, as well as finishing legacy projects that are already underway. He also said that 25% of the Common Fund will be used to build 24-hour economy model markets to help the local economy grow and create jobs.
