Seven Remanded for Open Defecation (AMA Court Ramps Up Sanitation Crackdown)

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court has sent seven people—Samuel Aryeequaye, Evans Derry, Kwesi Milla, Richard Quintin Coffie, Seidu Aminu, Awuaaba Michael, and Quarcoo Ernest—to jail for open defecation after they didn’t pay a fine of 50 penalty units (GH¢600). An eighth offender, Raphael Adjetey, paid the fine for the same crime. Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, said that the offenders were caught during a nighttime operation led by Mad. Florence Kuukyi, the Head of the Environmental Health Department. The operation took place in Bubuashie, Jamestown, and Chorkor and was part of a crackdown on unsanitary practices. He said that the AMA Environmental Health Department is now working around the clock to make sure that people follow sanitation laws, stop public nuisances, and protect public health. He urged people to stop going to the bathroom outside and use approved sanitary facilities, saying that arrests and prosecutions will continue.
