University of Ghana Postpones 2026/2027 Academic Year Reopening

Professor Gordon A. Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, has announced the postponement of the university’s reopening for the 2026/2027 academic year, originally scheduled for Monday, October 12. In a notice to students, he said a new date would be communicated in due course, without specifying the reason for the decision. The postponement comes amid an ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), which has disrupted administrative services, including first-semester registration. University management had earlier warned that prolonged industrial action could affect the academic calendar after acknowledging disruptions to key administrative systems.

Despite the delay, students have been advised to continue their online registration to secure their places for classes and qualify for the upcoming random bed allocation exercise. They have also been asked to follow the registration procedures outlined in earlier university communications. The decision follows a similar move by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which indefinitely postponed its reopening a day earlier, explicitly citing the GAUA strike and its impact on university operations. At the University of Ghana, management had previously suspended registration because of the industrial action, leaving key administrative processes affected as the dispute continues.
