Dutch detention: Asante Akim North MP gets lawyer as Parliament demands arrest warrant, Ayariga flies to Amsterdam.
Legal representation has been secured for the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, who remains in detention in the Netherlands, although Parliament says it is yet to receive an authenticated copy of the arrest warrant from Dutch prosecutors. The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, said the MP contacted him shortly after his arrest on Sunday, May 10, 2026, prompting immediate consultations with parliamentary leadership, including the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who travelled to Amsterdam to engage Dutch authorities. He noted that the Foreign Ministry, Ghana’s Ambassador to The Hague, the Attorney General, the Speaker and the Clerk to Parliament have all been involved in coordinating the matter, while a Netherlands-based Ghanaian lawyer has been engaged to represent the MP. Mr Dafeamekpor said Parliament is still awaiting official documents relating to the arrest and urged caution, adding that the MP, who was travelling on a diplomatic passport, is in good health and has not been mistreated, while authorities continue engagements with Dutch officials in The Hague.
