Afenyo-Markin defends Abronye DC: ‘Criticism of public officials is not a crime, this prosecution is pure politics.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned the arrest and prosecution of the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Kwame Baffoe saying the case was politically motivated and has no legal basis. Abronye DC was rearrested on May 13, 2026, on allegations of spreading false information and making offensive public statements. He was previously arrested in April for alleged offensive conduct and false publication, and remanded for two weeks. Mr Afenyo-Markin told a press conference on May 17 that criticism of public officials was protected by Article 21(1)(a) of the Constitution and Abronye’s statement did not meet the legal threshold under Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act concerning conduct likely to breach the peace. He said the prosecution was unmerited and the NPP has raised issues about freedom of expression and the application of the criminal law in cases of political comment. Authorities said investigations into the case are ongoing.
