Rural Banks to become Community Banks by December, BoG orders name changes, rebranding in microfinance reform.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced that all Rural Banks across the country will be converted into Community Banks as part of ongoing reforms in the microfinance sector aimed at strengthening inclusive finance and expanding access to banking services. The directive, contained in a press statement issued by the Bank’s Communications Department on Wednesday, June 17, requires all affected institutions to complete the necessary statutory name changes, corporate rebranding, and other regulatory adjustments by the end of December 2026. According to the statement, the conversion marks a significant milestone in the ongoing microfinance sector reform and is expected to usher in a new phase of community-level financial intermediation.
